Sustainable School – Environmental Award Programme

The Sustainable School – The Environmental Award program is a collaborative program between the Department of Environment, Ministry of Education Malaysia and the Institute of Environment and Development (LESTARI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) which was launched on 27 January 2005.

The Sustainable School – The Environmental Award program is an effort to implement the National Environmental Policy which has eight (8) principles and seven (7) green strategies. The first Green Strategy focuses on aspects of education and awareness that provide an understanding of the concept of environmental well-being and sustainable development, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Education and awareness of the preservation and conservation of the environment which requires knowledge, understanding, attitude change and community involvement. Sustainable School – The Environmental Award aims to create a school environment that emphasizes the preservation and conservation of the environment which can add value to the school in the five (5) components of Sustainable School which include management, co curriculum, greening, curriculum and special elements.

The involvement of the school community in the activities of the Sustainable School – Environmental Award is able to encourage the appreciation, practice and culture of environmentally friendly characteristics in the school environment, at home, with the local community, the general public and finally at the national level.

The Objectives of Sustainable School – Environmental Awards

The Sustainable School was formed to achieve the following objectives:-

  1. Cultivating the pure values ​​of the environment among school children
  2. Increase the level of awareness among school children regarding the importance of environmental preservation and conservation
  3. Encourage school children to carry out environmentally friendly activities effectively
  4. Increase cooperation between schools and the community in making environmental education a success
  5. Create a conducive school atmosphere to produce school members who practice sustainable living practices; and
  6. Cultivating civil values ​​and character development towards sustainable development.

Definition of Sustainable Schools – Environmental Awards

The Environmental Award Sustainable School uses the following Environmental Definitions:

“Learning to understand human interaction with the environment and how the environment is managed wisely and responsibly towards the sustainability of life on earth. This process involves education about the environment, through the environment and for the environment”.
