WORLD OZONE DAY 2023

The theme for the World Ozone Day in 2023 is Montreal Protocol: Fixing The Ozone Layer and Reducing Climate Change. The celebration for World Ozone Day 2023 took place on 3 October 2024, and was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Mohamad Razif bin Haji Abd Mubin, Deputy Secretary-General (Energy, Environment, and Climate Change), Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change.

The book titled ‘Healing the Ozone Layer – Our Story,’ which highlights Malaysia’s success in implementing the Montreal Protocol, was launched during the event. The celebration also witnessed the presentation of certificates of appreciation to 8 foam manufacturing entrepreneurs who successfully implemented technology conversion projects under the HPMP Phase II.

The presentation of the Europe & Central Asia Montreal Protocol Award for Customs and Enforcement Officers (5th edition) by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was also made by YBhg. This award recognizes the commitment of DOE enforcement officers in addressing illegal trade of ozone-depleting substances between European Union and Central Asian countries.

The celebration also featured an exhibition and a public awareness forum. The forum involved expert panels from the Energy Commission, Malaysian Meteorological Department, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The aim of the forum was to share information and raise public awareness regarding ozone layer recovery, climate change reduction, and efficient electricity management.

World Ozone Day celebrated in 2023 was observed not only at the national level but also at the DOE state offices, contributing to various awareness programs for ozone layer protection. These included activities such as Envirohunt, Fun Run for Our Ozone 2023, Ozone Race, Ozone Layer Depletion Seminar, Short Video Competition, Ozone Layer Protection Quiz, tree planting programs, and environmental exhibitions conducted in collaboration with institutions of higher learning, non-governmental organizations, and private entities.
