THE 15TH MEETING OF ASEAN WORKING GROUP ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (AWGEE)
The 15th AWGEE Meeting took place on 13–14 July 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, marking the first in-person meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic and signifying that, after 10 years, Malaysia was once again selected to host the meeting, with Cambodia serving as the Chair of AWGEE.
However, the Chairperson of AWGEE was unable to preside over the 15th AWGEE Meeting and has mandated Malaysia as the host by appointing Mr. Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar, Director General of Environment, as Vice Chairperson to lead the meeting.
The 15th AWGEE Meeting was attended by delegations from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, as well as Lao PDR and the Philippines, who participated online. The meeting also included ASEAN Partners such as the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC), EU SWITCH-Asia, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and Cerdas Antisipasi Risiko Bencana Indonesia (CAR!).
The Malaysian delegation to the 15th AWGEE Meeting was led by Ms. Mashitah binti Darus, Deputy Director General (Development) of the Department of Environment (DOE), Ms. Azuri Azizah binti Saedon, Director of Strategic Communications, DOE, along with representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change (NRECC), Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Education Malaysia, Ministry of Higher Education, and the Institute of Environment and Development (LESTARI).

Malaysia also shared its experience in implementing the Sustainable Schools (Eco School) program in the country.
Malaysia hopes that through the AWGEE platform, it can further advance and institutionalise environmental awareness within the education system, not only locally but also at the ASEAN level, and achieve shared ASEAN goals in environmental management and protection through environmental education.
Following the 15th AWGEE Meeting, the AWGEE delegation visited Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Keramat, Selangor, on 14 July 2024, led by Ms. Mashitah binti Darus, Deputy Director General (Development), DOE. The purpose of this visit was to share the experience of implementing the Sustainable Schools program in Malaysia with all AWGEE delegates. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Keramat, Selangor, is a recipient of the Sustainable Schools Environmental Award (SLAAS) for the 2020–2022 session in the secondary school category. This visit served as a benchmark for the implementation of Sustainable Schools in Malaysia, aimed at fostering environmental values and practices within the school community.
