Emission Control from Motor Vehicles
PETROL VEHICLES
Parameters controlled under the Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Diesel Engines) Regulations 1996 and the Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Petrol Engines) Regulations 1996.
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Hydrocarbons (HC),
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- Particles(PM)
TYPE APPROVAL TEST (PETROL VEHICLE)
Malaysia has introduced pollutant emission standards for new models of petrol -powered vehicles with the aim of improving pollutant emissions using new engine designs and emission control technologies. Any new model of motor vehicle on or after 1 January 2000 is required to comply with the pollutant emission standards set out in the Third Schedule, Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Petrol Engines) Regulations, 1996 based on Council Directive 94/12/EEC and 93/59/EEC. In 2019, DOE issued 43 Type Approval Test Certificates for new models of petrol vehicles to be marketed in Malaysia.
DIESEL VEHICLES
Control of excessive black smoke emissions from diesel vehicle exhaust is monitored through operation
- Static operations in an integrated manner with other enforcement agencies such as (JPJ and Traffic Police-PDRM)
- Observation operations through video cameras and the AWASI Program
Through this program, the DOE patrol squad will conduct enforcement, patrols, observation of black smoke emissions from vehicle exhausts and stop vehicles to conduct smoke tests on diesel vehicles that are observed to emit excessive black smoke.
Compound action will be taken immediately against drivers and owners of vehicles found to have failed to comply with the 50% opacity smoke emission limit. Compounds and prohibition orders (prohibition on using vehicles) will be issued if the vehicle is found to emit smoke in excess of 70% opacity.
TYPE APPROVAL TEST (DIESEL VEHICLE)
To control emissions from diesel vehicles in Malaysia, each new model of motor vehicle on or after 1 January 1997 is required to comply with the pollutant emission standards set out in the Second Schedule, Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Diesel Engines) Regulations, 1996 based on Regulation No. . 49.02 ECE and Council Directive 93/59/EEC. In 2019, DOE issued 74 Type Approval Test Certificates for new models of diesel vehicles to be marketed in Malaysia.
