MINAMATA CONVENTION

The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global agreement that was created to protect human health and the environment from exposure to the harmful effects of mercury through the control of emissions and the release of mercury compounds and mercury from anthropogenic sources. The Minamata Convention Agreement was adopted on 10 October 2011. In 2012, the Malaysian Government took the first step to participate in efforts towards the implementation of the Convention by establishing the National Steering Committee on Mercury. The country signed the Minamata Convention on 24 September 2014 but has yet to ratify the convention.
