Montreal Protocol

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, signed on 16 September 1987 is a Multilateral Environmental Agreement that regulates the production and use of 100 man-made chemicals identified as Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS).

Malaysia ratified and became a party to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer on 29 August 1989. For the Copenhagen Amendment to the Montreal Protocol (1992), the country agreed to the treaty on 5 August 1993. Meanwhile, for the London Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Ozone-Depleting Substances (1990), the country agreed to the protocol on 16 September 1993.

As for the Montreal Amendment to the Montreal Protocol (1997), Malaysia ratified the protocol on 26 October 2001. Additionally, Malaysia ratified the Beijing Amendment to the Montreal Protocol (1999) on 26 October 2001. On 21 October 2020, Malaysia ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Through active participation in the Montreal Protocol, Malaysia has won various prestigious awards throughout the years 1989-2018.
